Checked secondar air pump activation. Secondary air pump is activating. Will need additional diagnostic time to remove exhaust system and remove exhaust manifolds to check secondary air passages for flow.

What should I be looking at here in terms of cost? Unfortunately, the car is just out of warranty. Love the thing to death, but don't want to break the bank here. Is this something where I need to bite the bullet and have the BMW techs deal with it, or can I risk the local german autowerks guy? However a bad valvetronic motor can also cause faults in the eccentric shaft sensor, im curious to know what the fault code numbers and descriptions were. As far as leaks go from the valvetronic motor seal and eccentric shaft seal, they are possible, but you should only get charged parts cost on both of those seals if you are going to be paying to replace the eccentric shaft sensor, reason being you need to remove and install the valve cover in order to replace the eccentric shaft sensor and both of those seals are attached to the valve cover, so really no extra labor to replace both of those.

But the one i dont aggree with is the removing the exhaust to check secondary air passages, I have NEVER seen this on this engine. I would take my car to another BMW facility to get a re-evaluation. The tech should not only check the secondary air pump activation, but also check the secondary air valve and the hose that connects both of them. Turns out the first place was was going to try to double charge me labor for replacing those seals. They also said that dropping the exhaust manifolds was unnecessary for the problem with the eccentric shaft sensor, and they were unsure why the first place wanted to do that.

They are giving me a steep discount on labor compared to the other place and even hooked me up with a new headlight with no labor costs. Today, Bloomberg is reporting that the engine bolt issue has expanded into a recall for several world markets, involving somevehicles. BMW was able to verify that report to Autoblogwhile also providing a great deal more detail about the issue and vehicles affected.

In rare cases, the bolts holding the VANOS unit housing may become loose, or, in "extreme" cases, break. A broken bolt may trigger an engine warning light or send the engine into safe mode if the VANOS unit is compromised. Ignoring the issue could cause "no start conditions," stalling and further engine damage.

As you might suspect, BMW recommends that owners observing engine warning lights should arrange for service. Show full PR text. In very rare cases the bolts holding the variable camshaft timing VANOS unit housing may become loose or, in extreme cases, break.

If that happens, a "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" lamp will illuminate and a check control message will be displayed. If the operation of the VANOS unit is compromised, the engine will operate with reduced engine power in "safe mode". If ignored, the problem can become progressively worse, eventually leading to no start conditions, stalling and engine damage.The eccentric shaft position sensor is used as a feedback for the Valvetronic eccentric camshaft.

The eccentric shaft is actuated by the Valvetronic motor and in return controls variable intake valve lift. The eccentric shaft sensor is mounted to the cylinder head beneath the valve cover.

The top of the sensor protrudes up through valve cover and is sealed by a rubber gasket. The eccentric shaft sensor tends to wick engine oil up through electrical connector, creating an oil leak at top front of valve cover.

If you suspect your sensor is leaking, follow these steps to inspect and replace it. This is a time consuming repair, so plan a day for it and have everything you need on hand before you begin. Unplug the eccentric shaft sensor electrical connector by detaching locking tabs with a small flathead screwdriver and pulling up and out of sensor.

Inspect sensor and electrical connector for signs of engine oil. If any is found, replace eccentric shaft sensor, eccentric shaft sensor seal and clean electrical connector with terminal cleaner. See our tech article on valve cover replacing. Once valve cover has been removed, you will have to remove the eccentric shaft sensor fasteners green arrows. The top fasteners you'll want to remove using an open end 10mm wrench.

The lower fastener is accessed through a hole in timing chain guide, use a 10mm socket to remove it. When removing the fasteners, loosen each one a few turns at a time. The fasteners are captured on the sensor and doing it this way will avoid one coming free and possibly falling into engine.

Once all fasteners are loose, remove sensor from engine. Note how fasteners stay attached to sensor when removing. Be very careful not to cross-thread any of them. Once new sensor is installed remove eccentric shaft sensor seal from valve cover.

Gently lever seal out of valve cover using a flathead screwdriver. Leaving out while installing valve cover makes installation easier. Reinstall valve cover.

Valvetronic faults and failures

With valve cover installed, press new eccentric shaft seal into valve cover. I like to use a socket to press seal into valve cover. A 30mm socket should work, depending on brand of socket, you may need something larger or smaller.
