Remember Me? BMW Models. Results 1 to 8 of 8. Thread Tools Show Printable Version. No issues whatsoever with performance or mileage The narrative is below: "Multiple fault codes stored for eccentric shaft sensor and increment wheel.
Fault stored for secondary air system, flow too low on both banks. Fault stored for lean mixture. Performed test plan for eccentric shaft sensor.
Test plan state replace sensor. Recommend replacement of both sensor and increment wheel and recheck. Performed smoke check on intake system. Seal for valvetronic motor found to be leaking, seal for eccentric shaft sensor leaking. Recommend replacing both and rechecking. Mixture adaptations on both banks confirm air leak. Checked secondar air pump activation. Secondary air pump is activating. Will need additional diagnostic time to remove exhaust system and remove exhaust manifolds to check secondary air passages for flow.
What should I be looking at here in terms of cost? Unfortunately, the car is just out of warranty. Love the thing to death, but don't want to break the bank here. Is this something where I need to bite the bullet and have the BMW techs deal with it, or can I risk the local german autowerks guy? If only it could have been just the gas cap Hi, im a BMW master tech myself, I have seen the Eccentric shaft sensor go bad many times, usually there is oil in the plug connector that bolts to it when it goes bad.
However a bad valvetronic motor can also cause faults in the eccentric shaft sensor, im curious to know what the fault code numbers and descriptions were. As far as leaks go from the valvetronic motor seal and eccentric shaft seal, they are possible, but you should only get charged parts cost on both of those seals if you are going to be paying to replace the eccentric shaft sensor, reason being you need to remove and install the valve cover in order to replace the eccentric shaft sensor and both of those seals are attached to the valve cover, so really no extra labor to replace both of those.
But the one i dont aggree with is the removing the exhaust to check secondary air passages, I have NEVER seen this on this engine. I would take my car to another BMW facility to get a re-evaluation. The tech should not only check the secondary air pump activation, but also check the secondary air valve and the hose that connects both of them. Im willing to bet he will find the problem in one of those components. Originally Posted by E36Berto Took it to a different BMW service center.
Turns out the first place was was going to try to double charge me labor for replacing those seals. They also said that dropping the exhaust manifolds was unnecessary for the problem with the eccentric shaft sensor, and they were unsure why the first place wanted to do that.
They are giving me a steep discount on labor compared to the other place and even hooked me up with a new headlight with no labor costs. Amazing how different the experience at these BMW facilities can be. A service engine soon light came on. My car restarted without any problems and the engine idled without and problems and it also drove well. This page is for personal, non-commercial use.

It only takes a few seconds. BMW broadens engine bolt recall to nearly half-million cars worldwide. Seyth Miersma. Share 0 Comments. Almost one month ago, we reported on a BMW investigation into a potentially defective bolt that lived in the company's VANOS variable valve timing system.
At that point, the potential recall was seemingly limited to Chinese-market cars; the company was filing a recall application with Chinese officials.Textes de sexes soumissions de couples
Today, Bloomberg is reporting that the engine bolt issue has expanded into a recall for several world markets, involving somevehicles. BMW was able to verify that report to Autoblogwhile also providing a great deal more detail about the issue and vehicles affected.
In rare cases, the bolts holding the VANOS unit housing may become loose, or, in "extreme" cases, break. A broken bolt may trigger an engine warning light or send the engine into safe mode if the VANOS unit is compromised. Ignoring the issue could cause "no start conditions," stalling and further engine damage.
As you might suspect, BMW recommends that owners observing engine warning lights should arrange for service. Show full PR text. In very rare cases the bolts holding the variable camshaft timing VANOS unit housing may become loose or, in extreme cases, break.
If that happens, a "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" lamp will illuminate and a check control message will be displayed. If the operation of the VANOS unit is compromised, the engine will operate with reduced engine power in "safe mode". If ignored, the problem can become progressively worse, eventually leading to no start conditions, stalling and engine damage. The eccentric shaft position sensor is used as a feedback for the Valvetronic eccentric camshaft.
The eccentric shaft is actuated by the Valvetronic motor and in return controls variable intake valve lift. The eccentric shaft sensor is mounted to the cylinder head beneath the valve cover.
The top of the sensor protrudes up through valve cover and is sealed by a rubber gasket. The eccentric shaft sensor tends to wick engine oil up through electrical connector, creating an oil leak at top front of valve cover.
If you suspect your sensor is leaking, follow these steps to inspect and replace it. This is a time consuming repair, so plan a day for it and have everything you need on hand before you begin. Remove engine covers. See our tech article on engine cover removing. Unplug the eccentric shaft sensor electrical connector by detaching locking tabs with a small flathead screwdriver and pulling up and out of sensor.
Large Image Extra-Large Image.
Inspect sensor and electrical connector for signs of engine oil. If any is found, replace eccentric shaft sensor, eccentric shaft sensor seal and clean electrical connector with terminal cleaner. See our tech article on valve cover replacing. Once valve cover has been removed, you will have to remove the eccentric shaft sensor fasteners green arrows. The top fasteners you'll want to remove using an open end 10mm wrench.
The lower fastener is accessed through a hole in timing chain guide, use a 10mm socket to remove it. When removing the fasteners, loosen each one a few turns at a time. The fasteners are captured on the sensor and doing it this way will avoid one coming free and possibly falling into engine.
Once all fasteners are loose, remove sensor from engine. Note how fasteners stay attached to sensor when removing. Be very careful not to cross-thread any of them. Once new sensor is installed remove eccentric shaft sensor seal from valve cover.
Gently lever seal out of valve cover using a flathead screwdriver. Leaving out while installing valve cover makes installation easier. Reinstall valve cover.
Valvetronic faults and failures
With valve cover installed, press new eccentric shaft seal into valve cover. I like to use a socket to press seal into valve cover. A 30mm socket should work, depending on brand of socket, you may need something larger or smaller.

Unplug the eccentric shaft sensor - what does it do? Starting with the drive home from the shop, I've had this erratic idle which drops to about RPM, then shoots up to and comes back.
Occasionally it will stall when idling. I installed the BPC tune and it makes no difference, flashing back to stock gives me the exact same behavior.Swiper slider autoplay false
I reset all adaptations using INPA and the car drove perfect for 1 test drive, then the issues came back again. There are no consistent codes to help me figure out what is causing this. Now the only piece of useful info I've got - if I unplug the eccentric shaft sensor, the car idles and drives perfectly just like before I did the headers. This tells me it is not a failing injector, plug or coil. So, what gets disabled when I unplug the ESS?Methods of estimating population size
The DISA motors? Anything else? Should I just reset adaptations again? Appreciate 0. I do think this is a common problem, maybe the tuners can chime in? Thanks for your responses. I've driven it pretty hard since resetting adaptations, but it does not seem to have much effect.
Some drives, it is really not bad. Other drives, it is stalling out at red lights. How to make sumo robot using arduino
Sometimes the beginning of a drive is fine and the end is bad, sometimes it's the reverse. Here you can see I already removed the fuel injectors and the 3 injector and spark plug stands, you have to remove them to gain better access to the valvetronic motor,,also notice the oiler line, you should also replace this at the same time. Here you can see all the injector and spark plug stands removed. Now the fun started, during inspection I found the intake camshaft lobes pitted, only cylinder 5 and 6 were pitted,we have no idea what caused this or what happened, now are repairs have changed,we are going to replace the valvetronic motor, eccentric shaft, roller rocker arms and eccentric levers.
Here the valvetronic motor which is just a worm gear ,,which can move the eccentric shaft very fast. Here is the new intake camshaft and eccentric shaft, you can see the gear on the eccentric shaft which locks into the valvetronic motor.
When replacing the eccentric shaft there are also 6 needle bearing that have to be replace, the needle bearing and the 2 bearing half shell bearing. Here are all the new eccentric shaft levers. When replacing the levers and the roller rocker arms, they all have numbers on them,,so when you order new ones you need to know what the number is in the engine now,the levers and the roller arms are both Here is the roller rocker arm you can see number 2 stamped in it.
Her is the final assembly ,what I also forgot to say the vanos gear is removed, because you will be timing the engine, once your done you hope it starts, you also have to perform a teach in for valvetronic motor ,it performs about 50 test without it failing,if it fails you have to start the test all over again. Hi guys I am new here. I tried three different Indy mechanics but they cannot able to get my car going n I installed new valvetronic motor and new valve gasket.
Cleaned fuel injector. Well the car started but with crazy white smoke after three months. I try to teach valvetronic with Foxwell but it does not communicate. I spend lot of time. Like Liked by 1 person. Ok let me get this straight, the valvetronic motor was replaced and now 3 months later you have white smoke,,is that correct? Like Like. What do you think the problem is. Hi bmwtech, I was replacing eccentric shaft on my N20 engine first time and installed the oil spray nozzle wrong for the eccentric shaft and motor.
Part of the oil spray line was shaved off by the eccentric shaft and left markings on eccentric shaft gear. Do I need to replace the whole shaft or is it okay to keep using it, can you please take a look at my intake and exhaust lobe too.
Thanks in advance. So I just replaced eccentric shaft actuator on my N20 but I installed the oil spray nozzle for the actuator and gear wrong partI just removed valve cover to put the nozzle in correct way but part of the nozzle was shaved off by eccentric shaft and left markings on the gear. I would like to know if the eccentric shaft is still useable or do I need to replace whole shaft since there are markings on the gear.
Can you please check is the oil spray nozzle installed correctly this time and are the intake and exhaust lobe on my engine looking okay. Thanks for the replay I wonder where will the small pice of shaving that came off oil spray nozzle be? Hi, n55 Had the woodpecker noise for the last few months, the noise stopped now but getting warnings that engine operating at reduced power and no restart possible.
Nope there is no way to turn it off, every time the fault happens that light will come on,,sorry. Without this information, the engine would not be able to function properly. Over time, the camshaft position sensor can failor become worn down, due to accidents or normal wear and tear. There are a few warning signs to watch out for before your camshaft position sensor completely fails and shuts down the engine, making replacement a necessity. If your vehicle idles roughlystalls frequentlyhas a drop in engine powerstumbles frequently, has reduced gas mileageor accelerates slowlythese are all signs your camshaft position sensor could be failing.
If you have any of these symptoms, it could mean the camshaft position sensor needs to be replaced by a professional mechanic as soon as possible. It needs to be completed before the engine cuts out and dies while you are drivingor does not start at all.
The Check Engine Light will come on once the camshaft position sensor starts to go bad. Since this light can come on for many different reasonsit is best to have the vehicle thoroughly inspected by a professional. The mechanic will scan the ECM and see what error codes are being shown to diagnose the problem quickly. If you ignore the Check Engine Lightit can lead to serious engine problems, such as the engine failing.
If the other problems are ignored, eventually the vehicle will not start. Eventually, the signal will weaken so much the signal will switch off, and so will the engine. This can happen while the vehicle is parked, or while you are driving. The latter can be a dangerous situation. As soon as you notice your vehicle does not drive like it used to, the Check Engine Light is onor the vehicle will not start properly, the sensor may need to be replaced.
